Onam falls in the month of Chingam, which is the first month according to the Malayalam Calendar. The celebrations begin within a fortnight of the Malayalam New Year and go on for ten days.
Among ten days first four days are the most important and of course, 3rd-day "Tiruvonam" day is of utmost importance among all. Onam is the most important festival of Keralites not only in Kerala but for Keralites across the globe.

During the whole 10 days of the Onam festival, the houses are decorated with natural flowers in different ways. The flowers are decorated in front of the house which initially gets pasted with cow dung so that the flowers could stick to it and don't move away due to the wind. Whole Kerala state becomes in true means "God's own country" as these days throughout the Kerala city shop and other institutes get decorated with electric lights just as in north India it is decorated during Diwali days

Another most important highlights are that during these 10 days various special dishes are prepared at home irrespective of whether poor or rich and the dishes go to the extent of 20 or 30 items apart from rice payasam rasam, sambhar, achaar pappad. During these days even at home, everybody prefers to eat their food on Banana leaves only.

There is a saying in Kerala... i.e "KANAM VITTUM ONAM ONNANAM", (that is even if you are poor and has no money during this festival days, then you must go to the extent of selling a piece of your farmland to obtain money and then celebrate") On this day even the poorest of the poor celebrate the Onam with most fervor and enthusiasm.

The actual reason behind this festival is that Raja Mahabali was sent to catalog by "Lord Vaman" (Shri Vishnu Avtaar) and just before the moment of his being sent to "Paatal" as per King Mahalbali's last wish Lord Vishnu avatar agreed to grant the last wish of the king to visit his "Praja" once in every year. And during the Onam festival, it is believed King Mahabali returns to his country to see how happy his "Praja" are, and hence all remain or at least pretend to be happy by means of "Pookulam" (Flower decoration) and lavish life at home. All over the state of Kerala, festive rituals, traditional cuisine, dance, and music mark this harvest festival to a high level of ecstasy.
