Sisters apply 'Tilak' on the forehead of her brothers both young and elder and thus pray and show her concern for them. Sisters also enjoy return gifts from their loving brothers as they also feel jovial to use this opportunity to shower their love on their sisters.

In Goa Maharastra and Karnataka, it is known as "Bhau Beej" where Bhau means brother. Nepal which is the world's only Hindu nation, it is popularly known as "Bhai Tika" and "Bhathru Dwithiya, Bhau Deej, Bhai Photo in West Bengal, and Ningol Chakuba in Manipur which is one of the prominent Northeastern states of India.

According to Indian mythology, it is believed that God of Death "Yamraj", had visited his own Sister Yami on this special day whom he loves so much. His sister welcomed him by aarti and tilak ceremony and she offered him a garland and special dishes including sweets to eat. He had returned her sister a unique gift to his sister on this day the gift is, he declared that the brother who would receive tilak and aarti from their sister would never be frightened. That is another reason why the same day is also called the "Yama Dwitiya".

Another version of the history is that "Lord Shri Krishna had returned to visit his sister's place after killing the 'Demon King Narakasur' where he was welcomed by his sister with Tilak, Aarti, Sweets, and flowers. So since then, everybody started following the same and Sisters started celebrating the day by applying 'Tilak' garlanding and offering fruits, food as well as some gifts to the brothers from Sisters. Brothers take this opportunity to shower their lover to their sister by giving return gifts.

People from Maharastra, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, and Haryana celebrate this day with a very special passion and fervour. Maharashtrian prepare sweet dish known as "Basundi Poori" and "Kheerni Poori".
