Exam Phobia Before Exams and After Results- How to Handle
Now a days the children who
are preparing for the examinations are very much anxious than ever before to
perform. This anxiety to excel are taking toll on their minds and it eventually
lead to depression and other extreme situation which we need to address at the
proper time.
The following are a few
tips which if we take care would help our children come out of anxiety and
behave normally cotrolling their unnecessary urges that may creep in their mind
during these days.
·
Never compare them with any other
brighter students or scold them for their marks obtained. If at all you had
scolded make sure you complete it with proper soothing comfortable words with a
message that ‘ marks are not everything”
·
Convey to them that scoring good marks
help them an easy entry to highter studies but scoring less is not a Crime,
they also get addmission to higher studies.
·
Convey to them coming first in class is
not at all priority, our success in life depends upon our handling our
responsibility in a better way, not by proving better than any body else and
for the same understanding what we learn and remembering it when in need is
more important than coming first in class and not able to use any of them
during in need.
·
In case if the Results are not as
expected, never scold or show your displeasure to your children ( in such
situation they are dejected themself with sad state of mind and during that
time they need support and soothing words to comfort them and motivating them
rather than pointing fingers on them why and what went wrong). That can be done
after a cooling period when they bounce back from that phase of period.
·
In case of bad Results, parents must
closely watch the behaviour of the children without making them know that you
are anxious of them and never leave them alone and try to spend more time with
them.
·
In case of bad results, parents must give
the much needed pampering and pump motivation to child’s mind and brain by
patting them by saying a few words proving your complete confidence on the
child. Showing your complete confidence on the child without any blame on him
her will help them a lot.
·
Talk to them nicely and with full care
and thus convey the message that they are equally or more important irrespective
of the fact wheather they score better or not.
·
Present a nice gift to them for the
result obtained (though marks are less) with some comfort words which can be by
conveying “ Our ( or some successful relatives) marks during 10th 12th was much less than what you have scored”. So
he or she will be happy to have performed better than their parents or successful relatives. It will motivate them a lot.
·
Give a few examples of celebrities as
well as from your family and friend circles who had scored much much less but
are highly successful in life.
·
Never insist to study the subject of your
choice, let them choose as per their choice, you can only be a guide to them by
briefing them which subject may take them to which direction in their career.
·
Indulge them into the favorite games and
if possible spend some quality time outside home with complete family.
·
Most important of all Never leave them
alone till “ cooling period is over”.
Above all films like “Tare
Jamin Par” and “Three Idiots” and lot many others which gives lot of good
messages to the system can also be handy to narrate to them in order to restore
confidence in them. Before concluding I would like to point out a “naked truth”
that 90% of the suicides or suicide attempts of children are not due to the bad
results but due to the excessive ambitions and expectations of the parents. It is high time parents open their eyes and
stop laying “suicide traps” to their children by pumping in the burden of your
expectations and ambitions on them. When ever you speak to your children on
education and exams or results, make sure you don’t forget to convey to them
properly loudly and clearly that marks are very important for a student but not
more than the student himself or herself.
