इंद्रेश्वर से इंदौर और मल्हार राव के नाम से बना मल्हारगंज... 

कोई भी शहर बनता है, वहां रहने वाले लोगों से उनके व्यवहार और उनके काम से। होलकर स्टेट की राजधानी बनने के बाद 200 वर्षों में इंदौर ने कई उतार चढ़ाव देखें। यहां कई गली-मोहल्ले चौराहे बने और आबाद हुए। इनके नाम कैसे पड़े इसकी रोचक जानकारी पेश है। सरस्वती नदी के समीप इंदे्रश्वर मंदिर जो भगवान शिव का मंदिर है, इसी से इंदौर के नाम से उत्पत्ति हुई। यह सफर इंद्रेश्वर से शुरू होते-होते इंद्रपुरी और इंदूर से इंदौर होने तक का है।

उल्लेखनीय है कि सर्वप्रथम "इंदूर" शब्द का प्रयोग देवी अहिल्याबाई होलकर ने किया, जिसमें मराठी का असर दिखता है। युद्ध में भाग लेने के लिए मराठा फौज इंद्रेश्वर मंदिरके पास अपना डेरा डालती थी, क्योंकि यहां पर्याप्त मात्रा में अनाज, पानी था। इस समय इंदौर के जमींदार यहां से लगान वसूलते थे। जनवरी 1818 में जिला मुख्यालय कम्पेल से इंदौर स्थानांतरित हुआ और तभी इंदौर होलकर राज्य की राजधानी बना। शांत, सुंदर पानी से लबरेज, घने जंगलों से घिरा हुआ इंदौर अब महज सीमेंट कांक्रीट का जंगल बनकर रह गया है। शहर के विभिन्न गली-मोहल्लों के नाम मुख्यत: राजा-महाराजाओं, उनकी पत्नी, संतानों, सूबेदारों, विशिष्ट व्यक्तियों या किसी जाति विशेष के व्यवसाय के नाम पर रखे गए हैं।

चिमनबाग: चिमनजीराव बोलिया सरकार का एक विशाल बगीचा होने के कारण इसका नाम चिमनबाग रखा गया।

संयोगितागंज: यह नाम महाराजा यशवंतराव होलकर द्वितीय की प्रथम पत्नी महारानी संयोगिता राजे के नाम से 1931 में रखा गया। इनकी मृत्यु दुर्घटना में हुई थी।

सियागंज : शिवाजीराव होलकर (1886-1903) के समय में शिवाजी गंज बनाया गया। इसमें किसी भी वस्तु पर कर नहीं होता था, चूंकि उन दिनों अंग्रेजों ने रेसीडेंसी इलाके में टैक्स-फ्री वस्तुओं का बाजार शुरू किया था, इससे शहरवासियों को अपनी सरहदों में एक ऐसे बाजार की जरूरत महसूस हुई। इसी के कारण टैक्स-फ्री बाजार का निर्माण महाराजा शिवाजीराव ने शुरू किया। ये पहले सेवागंज और बाद में सियागंज के नाम से मशहूर हुआ।

स्नेहलता गंज : महाराजा तुकोजीराव होलकर तृतीय की दूसरी पत्नी इंद्राबाई की पुत्री स्नेहलता राजे के नाम पर रखा गया। इनकी मृत्यु बचपन में दिवाली पर पटाखों से जलने के कारण हुई थी।

यशवंत सागर: 1939 में यशवंतराव होलकर द्वितीय द्वारा गंभीर नदी में 70 लाख की लागत से बांध बनवाया गया जो यशवंत सागर कहलाया। यह होलकर रियासत की सबसे महंगी योजना थी, जिसे इंदौर वासियों ने सदियों तक पानी की समस्या को नहीं पनपने दिया। उल्लेखनीय है कि इसके निर्माण में तांबे के पाइप बिछाए गए थे।

 जूना तुकोगंज: महाराजा तुकोजीराव होलकर द्वितीय (1850) के नाम पर रखा गया। महाराजा तुकोजीराव आधुनिक इंदौर के निर्माता हैं। उनके प्रयास से इंदौर में मालवा अखबार, इंदौर की पहली कपड़ा मिल और रेलवे लाइन आई।

नया तुकोगंज - महाराजा तुकोजीराव होलकर तृतीय के नाम पर बसाया गया।

प्रिंस यशवंत रोड: बाला साहब यशवंतराव होलकर की किशोर अवस्था में इस रोड का नाम प्रिंस यशवंत रोड (पीवाय रोड) रखा गया। यह रोड इंदौर का सर्वप्रथम सीमेंट कांक्रीट का रोड थी, जिसे कॉलम-बीम डालकर बनाया गया।

बक्षीबाग: बक्षी खुमानसिंह होलकर स्टेट आर्मी के कमांडर-इन-चीफ थे। उन्हें मैन ऑफ दी स्वोर्ड के साथ मैन-ऑफ-दी पैन भी कहा जाता था। उनकी हस्तलेखनी तथा वीरता के कारण वे प्रख्यात थे। 1857 के गदर में उन्होंने मुख्य भूमिका अदा की थी।

एमवाय हॉस्पिटल : महाराजा यशवंतराव होलकर हॉस्पिटल का निर्माण 18 फरवरी 1950 में शुरू हुआ। महाराजा ने अपनी ओर से तीस लाख का अनुदान दिया। सन् 1955 में बनकर तैयार यह हॉस्पिटल तब एशिया की बड़ी इमारतों में शामिल हो गया। इसका डिजाइन ऑस्टे्रलियन आर्किटेक्ट कॉल वार्न हिन्स ने बनाया था।

उषागंज: महाराजा यशवंतराव होलकर द्वितीय की प्रथम पत्नी संयोगिताराजे की पुत्री उषाराजे के नाम से उषागंज रखा गया। इनका जन्म पेरिस में हुआ तथा किशोरावस्था तक ये फ्रांस में रही।

कृष्णपुरा : महाराजा यशवंतराव होलकर प्रथम की पत्नी कृष्णाबाई होलकर के समाधि स्थल के निर्माण के कारण यह क्षेत्र कृष्णपुरा के नाम से जाना जाता है। इन्हें केसरबाई के नाम से भी जाना जाता था।

महारानी रोड : महाराजा तुकोजीराव होलकर तृतीय की प्रथम पत्नी महारानी चंद्रावतीबाई के नाम पर यहां पर १९११ में महिला चिकित्सालय बना था। इस कारण इस रोड का नाम महारानी रोड रखा गया।

रानीपुरा : महाराजा तुकोजीराव होलकर द्वितीय की पत्नी के नाम से बसा रानीपुरा। यहां पर लखनऊ से आए मुस्लिम बुनकरों को बसाया गया। इसका उल्लेख तारीखे मालवा में भी मिलता है।

यशवंत निवास रोड : यशवंतराव होलकर द्वितीय के निवास के रूप में बनी इमारत के कारण यह मार्ग यशवंत निवास रोड कहलाया। हालांकि यशवंतराव होलकर कभी इस इमारत में नहीं रहे। यह इमारत आज भी इस रोड पर स्टेट बैंक के पास मौजूद है।

 मनोरमागंज : महाराजा तुकोजीराव होलकर तृतीय की प्रथम पत्नी महारानी चंद्रावतीबाई होलकर की पुत्री मनोरमा राजे के नाम से रखा गया। इनकी मृत्यु टीबी के कारण हुई। इन्हीं के नाम से इंदौर में टीबी हॉस्पिटल बना जो आज भी है।

 नंदलालपुरा : होलकरों के आगमन के पूर्व इंदौर की जमींदारी नंदलाल जमींदार के हाथों में थी। इसी कारण यह इलाका नंदलालपुरा कहलाया।

 यशवंत बाजार : छावनी के समीप की मुख्य सडक़ यशवंत बाजार कहलाई जो महाराज यशवंतराव होलकर द्वितीय के नाम पर रखी गई।

 रानी सराय: रानी सराय का निर्माण सन् 1907 में किया गया। महाराजा शिवाजीराव होलकर की पत्नी वाराणसीबाई होलकर के नाम से बनी थी। पहले इसे महारानी सराय कहते थे। बाद में रानी सराय नाम हुआ। वर्तमान में यहां पुलिस हेड क्वार्टर है।

 किबे कम्पाउण्ड: दीवान सरदार अदी साहब किबे के नाम से किबे कंपाउंड रखा गया। कहावत थी कि होलकर का राज किबे का ब्याज। सरदार किबे ने कई बार होलकर स्टेट को वित्तीय सहायता प्रदान की थी।

 शिव विलास पैलेस : शिव विलास पैलेस, न्यू पैलेस के नाम से मशहूर है। इसका निर्माण महाराजा शिवाजीराव होलकर ने सन् 1894 में लोकल इंजीनियरों को लेकर किया।

रामपुर कोठी : महाराजा हरिराव के समय से ही रामपुर नवाब होलकरों के घनिष्ठ मित्र थे। लालबाग की इमारत के पूर्व सारी महफिलें रामपुर कोठी में हुआ करती थी। यहीं नजदीक में महाराजा हरिराव होलकर द्वारा एक बावड़ी का निर्माण कराया गया था।
