गाँधी की खिलाफत आंदोलन प्रारम्भ किया था, जिसके बाद लाखों हिंदुओं का कत्लेआम मोपला में हुआ था। इसीलिए गाँधी को गंधासुर की उपाधि दी गई है। जब मुसलमानों ने बडे स्तर पर हिंदुओं का कत्लेआम, बलात्कार और धर्मान्तरण कराया तो गांधी ने उन मुसलमानों को स्वतंत्रता संग्राम सेनानी की उपाधि दी। कांग्रेस ने स्वतंत्रता संग्राम सेनानियों की सूची में उन 350 मुसलमानों को भी शामिल किया जिन्होंने हिनुओं पर अत्याचार किये। हाल में ही मोदी ने उनका नाम सूची से हटाया है।
