Prayagraj Kumbh Largest Spiritual Gathering
Once Durvasa Muni cursed the Demigods. Due to his curse, they lost their strength. The didn’t stop there and approached Lord Brahma and Lord Shiva in order to regain their strength. Both of them Lord Brahma and Lord Shiva gave advice to Demigods that they need to pray Lord Vishnu to regain their strength.
Lord Vishnu asked them to churn the ocean of milk which was then known as Ksheera Sagar in order to get Amrit. It was the only solution to regain their strength back, but this task was so sturdy for all of them. Since the demigods had not enough power and strength to do this task alone, they made a mutual agreement with Demons. The Demons were agreed to help them at only one condition. The condition was that they had to share half of the nectar of immortality (Amrit) with them. The Meru Mountain played the role of churning rod to churn Ksheera Sagar. The king of serpents “Vasuki” played the part of rope around the mountain.

Fourteen unique items were produced through the process of churning-
Poison, Kamdhenu (also known as wish-fulfilling Cow), Uchchaihshravas (A kind of White Horse), Airavat (An elephant having four tusks), Koustubha mani (A diamond), Parijat Kalpavruksha (A wish-fulfilling tree), Devanganas such as Rambha etc., Shri Lakshmi Devi (Consort of Shrivishṇu), Sura (Alcohol), Som (Moon), Haridhanu (A Divine bow), A Conch, Dhanwantari, Amrit Kalash or Amrit Kumbh (Pot of Amrit).
The Gods had fear in their mind that if the Demons became immortal by drinking Amrit, they will definitely create havoc in the whole world. Therefore, then Dhanwantari appeared with Amrit Kalash in her hands, the Gods gave a signal to the Indra’s son, Jayant, to take that pot from Dhanwantari.
To get that Amrit Kalash, the Demons and Gods fought around 12 days as well as 12 nights. The one day of that time is considered to be equal to one year of the present time. During this battle, the few drops of Amrit fell down at four places of Earth. The places were Prayag, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik. That is why Kumbh Mela is celebrated every 12 years on these four places. This is the story behind the Origin of Kumbh Mela.
Astronomical Significance
Also, just the way river Ganga is considered to be holy and sacred on earth, the path that Jupiter follows in the sky is considered as sacred. Jupiter moves from Aquarius, Taurus, Scorpio and Leo. When it enters Aquarius the Kumbh Mela is held and when it enters other constellations smaller Kumbh Melas are held at other 3 locations in the country. It takes 3 earth years for Jupiter to move from one constellation to other. It might be noted that Aquarius is also symbolized as a pot pouring elixir on earth.
History and Naga Sadhus
One of the key characteristic of Kumbha Mela is the Naga Sadhus. The warrior monks. They are also totally naked. This Sadhus follow the oldest monk tradition in the world. They are mentioned in Rig Veda. They often fought battles as mercenaries. It is believed that Kumbha Mela is as old as the Naga tradition which means that the history probably goes back to Rigvedic time.
Importance of Pilgrimage
Indian mythology is full of examples where people walked to river ganga for the bath. This may be the case for multiple reasons one importance being that the healing power of the water. Water of Ganga is very rich in minerals and may be in olden days it helped cure several illnesses. (That might be the case with most Himalayan rivers or for that matter even southern rivers like Narmada).
